Michigan is home to thousands of lakes and has more beaches than the entire Atlantic coastline of America. Moreover, this state comprises two large peninsulas and includes many secluded and scenic islands. It lies in the heart of the Great Lakes region in the north of the US-Canada border.

The state has an abundance of forests and wilderness while being dominated by its wealth of waterways. All of these natural wonders give you ample opportunities to enjoy some fantastic outdoor activities. So, here are some of these activities you can enjoy in the northern part of Michigan:

1. Go biking on the Little Traverse Wheelway

You’ll be mesmerized by the natural beauty of the Little Traverse Wheelway while biking on the paved trail. This 26-mile stretch runs between Harbor Springs and Charlevoix along the waterfront. It will take you from one breathtaking scenery to the next while passing through Bay View and Bay Harbor. There are bikes available on rent for this activity, but you can bring your own. No matter how slow you ride, make sure you keep your eyes on the road!

2. Visit the Lavender Hill Farm

The Lavender Hill Farm located in Boyne City is one of the state’s largest commercial lavender farms. You can explore this beautiful farm with one of the daily tours. It will surely give you an entirely different farm experience. You’ll find yourself amid shades of purple as you take in the lingering fragrance.

3. Play a round of disc golf

Disc golf is an exciting outdoor activity you can try in the northern part of Michigan during summers. You can take a hike up the Avalanche Mountain Preserve, located in Boyne City. Upon reaching the top of the mountain preserve, you’ll get a wonderful panoramic view of northern Michigan.

On one side of the mountain, you can see Lake Charlevoix. You can play disc golf on one of the top courses in the state on the other side. During your trip, you can also explore many other trails that are ideal for hiking and mountain biking. The preserve also offers an archery range, which the archers use during summers.

4. Savor the best of nature in the preserves of Petoskey Area

You’ll find many nature preserves within the Petoskey Area. They give you the chance to enjoy hiking, fishing, birdwatching, and other activities. You can also embark on a journey of exploration on the waters. Go boating by renting a kayak or make a splash with the paddleboard.

If you’re traveling with your entire family including kids, head to one of the beaches. The little ones will have lots of fun building sandcastles on the beach.

5. Explore the arts and architecture

You’ll get to witness a wide range of national acts while in Michigan. They’re hosted in the 500-seat Great Lakes Center for the Arts. If you love arts and culture, you can also check out the events at the Crooked Tree Arts Center. Tour the Bay View neighborhood that has more than 400 historic buildings.
