General Meeting Minutes for September 16, 2009

The meeting was called to order by Lisa Mitchell at 7:10 pm at the Springport Township Hall.  Members and guests present included: Megan Merrill, Linda Griffith, Chuck & Susan Arntz, Nathan Saeab, Jeff Mitchell, and Bill Russell.
Motion by Bill Russell and seconded by Megan to approve the agenda.  Motion carried.
Motion by Lisa to approve the minutes as read, seconded by Jeff.  Motion carried.
No Treasurer’s Report this month due to the absence of the Treasurer.  It was reported that our CD is maturing on the 27th.  Motion by Jeff and seconded by Megan to reinvest $6,000 or the CD back into a new CD and the rest in checking.  Motion carried. 
Linda Griffith presented an Annual Beautification of Springport.  Motion by Megan to accept Linda’s proposal, seconded by Bill.  Motion carried. Highlights include:

  • Purchase mums in the fall
  • Lights for Christmas
  • Wreath making on December 6, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Tim & Linda Griffiths
  • Spring plants, and mulch

Motion by Jeff and seconded by Megan to spend $394.00 for 2 new trees for around town, such as at the entrance of the DPW site and by the Baptist Church.  These are replacement trees for ones that were taken out or removed due to being under power lines.  Motion carried.
Under committee reports, the Events committee discussed that organizers for 8-80 events PLEASE CREATE A PLANNING SHEET and submit it to SAGA or Tim Griffith also include results (number attended, etc.) – Please bring this in to the next meeting.
The Fundraising/Membership committee will have more to report at the October meeting.
The Media and Public Relations Committee discussed finding some students to carry the SAGA banner and hand out balloons at the Homecoming parade.  Motion by Lisa and seconded by Bill to spend money on a helium tank for balloons for the parade.  Motion carried.  It was also discussed that Lisa has mailed the letters out to businesses seeking the first 50 businesses in the brochure in cooperation with the DDA.
The Townships Committee reported that Farmfest tour is near Horton Saturday September 19th from 11:00am – 5:00pm.  At the Jackson Ag Council meeting it was discussed that the Governor plans to take 25% off of the Extension line item in the state budget which would be detrimental to the agricultural community.  It was reported that the Jackson County Fair will operate in 2010 whereas the State Fair will not occur in 2010 due to state budget cuts.
The Youth Outreach Committee, didn't have anything to report.

Under Open Forum, it was discussed that there is a Hunger Walk on September 27th at the Springport Methodist Church, they are taking donations if you can’t walk (which will be on the SHS Track that afternoon) for the Springport Food Pantry, which is feeding 60 families regularly right now.  The FFA is also organizing the school-wide food drive the month of November as well and would like to invite local businesses to put out donation boxes.
Please submit names of anyone who would like to receive a yearly newsletter that might be interested in getting involved in community events.
The next SAGA meeting will be Wednesday OCTOBER 21, 2009 at 7:00 pm at the Springport Township Hall.  Meeting adjourned at 7:50 pm.
