Springport Area Growth Association
General Meeting Minutes for August 16, 2006

Members and guests present included: Jeff & Lisa Mitchell, Tim & Linda Griffith, Megan Merrill, and Becky Wilson.

SAGA has a balance of $7,775.19 as of 8/16/06. Final expenditures are being put together for a 2007 budget for 8-80 Days based on 2006 income and expenses.  Donations for the 2007 8-80 Days, the Depot, or Fireworks can be earmarked for spending.

Under old business, the restoration of the Depot was discussed.  If you haven’t noticed, a fresh coat of paint has been added and will be finished close to the end of September due to dust in the area from construction.  More information will be provided at the September 20th meeting about restoration efforts.  If you are interested in this project, please attend the meeting.

Under new business, the elections have been postponed until the September 20th meeting due to a lack of attendance.  Also under new business, the fundraiser for Dan Merritt was discussed.  Dan is still recovering from his injuries received from his fall in the elevator shaft.  He would like to come home, but since his home is on the second floor he is unable to get up and down the stairs.  In order to get him home, a 16 x 36 addition is needed to be added onto his home.  The fundraiser is asking for donations of time/labor, materials, and money to achieve this goal.  An account has been set up at Homestead Savings or donations can be given to Rosi Terpening at the Village of Springport office or call 517-857-3211 for pickup.  Donations of labor from tree cutters, plumbers, electricians, heating contractors, concrete workers, dry wallers, carpenters, etc. will be needed.  A material list will be available soon.

The Events Committee would like to congratulate Leona Keeler for winning the Spotlight on Springport contest at 8-80 Days and THANK her for donating $50 of her winnings to SAGA.

The Media and PR committee would like to THANK Lance Mitchell for donating the sponsorship of the web site for 2006.  The sponsor for 2007 will be Spring Harbor.  The committee also reported that a banner and brochures will be available during Homecoming on September 15th to promote SAGA.

SAGA would like to welcome a new member and servant of the community, Jack Berenstein.  Jack is the ordinance enforcement officer for Springport who volunteers his time to work for our community.  He is a reserve officer and travels from Detroit to work in Springport.

The 2006 Christmas Home Tour and New Downtown Celebration and Springport Open House will be the weekend of December 2nd.  SAGA is planning to have a Christmas Cookie and Craft Exchange as well as other events.  If you are interested in helping with the event, come to the next SAGA meeting Sept. 20th or contact Linda Griffith.

Under the open forum, the Library is having an Expansion Plans meeting on August 23rd at 7:00 pm.

The next SAGA meeting will be on Wednesday September 20th at 7:00 pm at the village office.  BRING A FRIEND to the next SAGA meeting, items on the agenda will include elections, the depot restoration, and the Christmas home tour and downtown celebration open house.

Respectfully Submitted,
Megan Merrill (Burgess)
SAGA Secretary
