The regular meeting of the Springport Area Growth Association was called to order by President Lisa Mitchell at 7:04 pm.  Members present included Megan Merrill, Bill Russell, Jeff Mitchell, Chuck Arntz , and Jackie Merritt with guest Teresa Crandall, Ben Crandall, and Jarod Jenson.

Motion by Bill and seconded by Jeff to approve the agenda.  Minutes from the June meeting were read.  Motion by Bill and seconded by Jackie to accept the secretaries report.  Motion carried.

The Treasurer’s report discussed that the balance as of July 20, 2011 was $2,579.63. A detailed outline of income and expenses were recorded.  Motion by Bill and seconded by Megan to approve the treasurer’s report per audit.  Motion carried.

Under the Events committee, plans for the 2012 8-80 Days were discussed with the possibility of changing the date to the weekend after Father’s Day.  Some of the con’s of moving 8-80 Days weekend would be for possibly some scheduling conflicts with Duck Lake garage sales.  The pro’s discussed consist of no conflicts with father’s day or MIS, the tractor pull will stay with the 8-80 Days weekend.  It was discussed, what is the meaning of 8-80? Therefore a tag-line will be added to the festival:  “A festival for young and old”.  Some changes were discussed such as keeping the 3K run free, but charging $5 for the shirt with all donations to GirlsQuest.  Motion by Megan and seconded by Jeff that 2012 Springport 8-80 Days be the weekend of June 23, 2012.  It was discussed whether or not to change it from a 3 day to a 2 or 1 day festival by consolidating events into 1 day.  One of the best attended events was the water ball tournament in the afternoon.  It was discussed how to make the afternoon more attended, put arts and crafts along the sidewalks downtown.  Motion carried.

Under the Fundraising committee, it was reported that the Calendar Photo Contest is still looking for submissions; submit photos as least 1600 x 1200 without people in them to merrittja@myjdl.com by September (photos do not have to be current).  We are in need of coming up with some new fundraisers since the Palm Sunday breakfast can no longer happen since the Centennial House closed.  A euchre tournament was discussed as a fundraiser; fall pancake supper in the township hall or a soup & sandwich dinner.

Under Media and Public Relations and under Townships, no items were discussed.   A couple of new items:  Jackie announced that Congressman Tim Walberg will be having coffee hour at the library on Saturday July 30 from 10:00 – 11:00 am; also there was an article in the Cit Pat about how non-profit organizations were going to be dropped from the state’s list if they weren’t compliant.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday August 17, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the Springport Township Hall.  Neighborhood Watch meeting is August 3, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the Springport Township Hall.  Jackson County Farmfest Tours will be on September 17, 2011.  The meeting was adjourned at 8:34 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Megan Merrill
