Springport Area Growth Association
General Meeting Minutes October 19, 2005

The meeting was called to order at 7:08pm by President Lisa Mitchell. Several members were present.

Rosi began the meeting with an update from the village, reporting that she had met with MDOT, who requested to know “how we’re doing” in raising money for the streetscape, of which she reported that SAGA will have fundraised near $9,000 and the village $20,000. At that time she discovered that there may be a grant that could furbish the $50,000 to help us get the matching dollars that are needed to complete the grant. This however it is not promised, but it is a possibility that she is strongly looking into with the help of state representative Leslie Mortimer. Construction on the downtown is scheduled to begin this summer on June 15th. Plans for 8-80 Days is being researched since the downtown will be under construction.

The minutes from the August meeting were read and approved.

Under old business, it was moved by Megan and seconded by Dan Merritt to accept the bottom logo (nonitalized). Motion carried.

The brochure was also discussed, and printing on the first 1,000 Springport brochures will begin and will be ready for distribution at the next SAGA meeting.

Treasurer, Dan Merritt, reported that the new balance as of October 19, 2005 was $4,965.34. A bill of $331.50 was presented for the lawyer bill to achieve 501c3 status as well as ink cartridges for the printing of the brochures.

The FFA Marketing team consisting of Chris Sanford, Bethany Needham, and Danielle Martinez presented their Pastured Poultry Marketing presentation that will be performed next week at the National FFA Convention marketing plan competition.

The Fundraising/Membership committee reported that they will be doing a candle sale, of which 55 have been sold already and if you are interested in purchasing, they will be available at CJ’s Boutique. SAGA will also be having a Bake Sale on November 19th at the Township Hall. Volunteers are needed to help set-up, donate baked items, and clean-up. There will be door prizes available, contact Brenda Heisler if you are interested.

Karen Harrison presented items available for purchase at a discount from her family owned and operated business the Sublimation Station in Albion. She does custom embroidery, coffee mugs, tiles, t-shirts, mouse pads, coasters, aluminum bookmarks, key chains and much more.

SAGA will be looking into the Michigan Township Association to check on legality of townships donating to the streetscape project.

The Media and Public Relations committee reported that they are looking into developing welcome packets to those new to the community. The packets would possibly contain: a 1 month subscription to the Signal, SAFE and SAGA brochures, bookmarks, village minutes and newsletter, SAGA membership flyer and form, township listing, school brochures, as well as renter information and business coupons. It was suggested that the committee also look into how and who would get the packets by checking forward addresses or license address changes. More information will be reported at a later time.

The Youth Outreach committee has a new chairperson, Adam Mitchell, who will be working with the youth to develop fundraising and involvement ideas.

The SAGA Christmas Tour has 5 homes that will be spotlighted for the event. Themes include 30-40 trees, John Deere Christmas, Christmas through a child’s eyes, and Victorian Christmas. The tour will be on December 4th from 1:00-5:00pm. Advance tickets will be $8.00 each and $10.00 at the door. Tickets will be available at Country Town Golf Course, Merritt’s Hardware, and at the homes featured on the tour. More information will be coming soon.

The Up-towners will be selling Christmas trees at Keeler’s Garage, the Devereaux Merritt’s Store, and possibly at the Duck Lake Store.

The next SAGA meeting will be on November 16th at 7:00pm at the Village Office.

Meeting adjourned at 8:38pm.

Respectfully Submitted,
