Springport Area Growth Association
General Meeting Minutes for October 15, 2008

The meeting was called to order by Lisa Mitchell at 7:08 pm at the Springport Township Hall.  Members and guests present included: Megan Merrill, Jeff Mitchell, Dan and Jackie Merritt, Bill Russell, Tim and Linda Griffith, and Sherry Binkowski.

Motion by Megan to approve the agenda, seconded by Dan Merritt.  Motion carried.

Motion by Dan to approval the minutes as read, seconded by Megan Merrill.  Motion carried.

SAGA has a balance of $1,841.29 as of 10/15/08 with $100 in savings and $8,000.00 in a CD.  Motion by Bill Russell and seconded by Jeff Mitchell to accept the treasurer’s report per audit.  Motion carried. 

Under committee reports, the Events committee reported that they will start planning for the 2009 8-80 Days in January.

The Fundraising/Membership committee discussed the next Poker Tournament will be Saturday October 25th at the River’s Bend in Eaton Rapids starting at noon. 

The Media and Public Relations committee reported that pencils and candy from SAGA is ready for the Halloween Parade on October 31st.  SAGA is looking into having a dedication for the Mosaic Mural project on Merritt’s Hardware, Jackie Merritt is looking into details (possibly on Halloween at 5:30 pm)

The Townships committee reported that there was a meeting on Sept. 23rd at the Albion Equine Facility to discuss the feasibility of large-scale equine facility.  Locations are still under discussion since the facility would require significant land availability. 

The Youth Outreach did not have anything to report.

Under Old Business, the Springport sign is still being finished and should be up in a week or two.  On November 30th at 2:00 pm will be the Wreath Making Party for the downtown holiday wreaths.  Everyone is welcome to come and help make the wreaths.

Under New Business items presented included information possibly purchasing a sign to announce SAGA events.  Motion by Megan and seconded by Bill Russell to spend under $250 to purchase a “sandwich-board” sign.  Motion carried.

Under Open Forum, the Springport Agriscience Department is organizing a HarvestFest on Nov 7th to celebrate local food, agriculture, and community.  The event will include a local foods meal for all Springport students with Springport FFA Lamb, mashed potatoes & squash, and apple crisp. Motion by Dan and seconded by Jeff to donate $100.00 to the HarvestFest.  Motion carried.  Motion by Lisa and seconded by Megan to donate $100.00 to Fireworks for Football Games.  Motion carried.  There will be a Pumpkin Contest on Saturday October 25th at 10:00 am at the General Store in Devereaux.  You will need to bring your already carved or decorated Jack O’Lantern and win a prize.  Cider, donuts and treats for participants.  For ages under 3, 4-6, 7-12, 13 and older. 

Comments were made about the amount of cigarette butts being thrown out in the plant areas in town.  Anyone looking for community service, could clean up cigarette butts on planting areas or donate cigarette butt containers for the downtown.

Sherry Binkowski opened discussion about a Springport Museum to preserve historical items.

The next SAGA meeting will be on Wednesday November 19, 2008 at 7:00 pm at the Springport Township Hall.  Meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm.
