General Meeting Minutes for January 21, 2009

The meeting was called to order by Lisa Mitchell at 7:01 pm at the Springport Township Hall.  Members and guests present included: Megan Merrill, Jeff Mitchell, Dan and Jackie Merritt, Bill Russell, Samantha Thacker, and special guests Hugh Tomlinson, and Kristy Dyer.

Motion by Megan and seconded by Bill to move special guest presentations to the beginning of the meeting.  Motion carried.

Hugh Tomlinson presented the painting done by Greg Mitchell of the Log Cabin as a possible fundraiser for SAGA with the suggestion to scan to sell for copies and then professionally frame the original for display in a local art museum.

Kristy Dyer, committee chair of the FFA Community Outreach committee, came to seek project ideas for 2009 Spartan Sparkle with a proposed date of Friday May 1, 2009.  Please email her at kristy@springportffa.com for suggestions.

Motion by Bill to approve the agenda, seconded by Megan.  Motion carried.

Motion by Dan to approval the minutes as read, seconded by Bill.  Motion carried.

Dan presented an annual report for SAGA with an ending balance on 12/31/08 of $579.19.  Motion by Bill Russell and seconded by Jeff to accept the treasurer’s report per audit.  Motion carried. 

Motion by Megan and seconded by Jeff to open nominations for officers and trustees for SAGA for 2009.

Motion by Bill and seconded by Megan to close nominations and unanimously elect the following board members for 2009: Lisa Mitchell-President, Megan Merrill-Secretary, Samantha Thacker-Treasurer, Jeff Mitchell-1st Vice President, Bill Russell-2nd Vice President. Motion carried.

Under committee reports, the Events committee started planning for 2009 8-80 Days for June 19, 20, 21, 2009.  The timeline to get a schedule set is Event coordinators determined by Feb. meeting, with final schedule ready in March to print posters, brochures, etc. in April for distribution with sponsor letters in May.  Please contact a member of SAGA (listed above or online at www.springportmi.com) if you would like to help coordinate an 8-80 Days event.  A tentative schedule is available online at www.springportmi.com under the events tab.  It was suggested to start a volunteer list to send a thank-you to those that volunteer for 8-80 Days. Please come up with an idea for a 2009 theme for 8-80 Days at the February meeting.

The Fundraising/Membership committee reported that the scrapbooking party, a “crop” at the Township Hall for a fundraiser is still a possibility if interest is generated, more information may be presented at the February meeting.  SAGA is still planning to do the Palm Sunday breakfast for a spring fundraiser at the Centennial House.

The Media and Public Relations committee reported that Woodworker’s Barn will be the 2009 sponsor of www.springportmi.com.

The Townships Committee reported that Springport Township appointed a committee to look into the horse park information and plans to meet on January 28th at the Springport Village Office at 7:00 pm.  If you are interested in horses and anything to do with them, your attendance at this meeting would be greatly appreciated.  Letters of support by Springport community members is also appreciated and can be submitted to Jeff Mitchell at the Springport Village Office.

The Youth Outreach committee will be looking into finding any bands that may want to play at 8-80 Days this year.
Under Old Business, Lisa will be going to the next DDA meeting to discuss brochures.
Under New Business, SAGA would like to thank Dan Merritt for all of his service to SAGA and the community.
Under Open Forum, Bill Russell reported that the Jackson Spring Tree Sale is out for 2009 through the Jackson County Conservation District.  Linda reported that the lights downtown were a success and we may need to purchase more pots.

The next SAGA meeting will be Wednesday February 18, 2009 at 7:00 pm at the Springport Township Hall.  Meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm. (DDA meeting February 16, 2009 at 7:30 pm at the Springport Village office).
